According to the HSE website: “Asbestos can be found in any building built before the year 2000 (houses, factories, offices, schools, hospitals etc) and causes around 5000 deaths every year.”

The HSE provides a step-by-step guide for anyone who is responsible for maintaining a building that may potentially have asbestos including how to inspect the building, determining priorities, testing for asbestos and what processes you will need to perform when getting maintenance work done on the building.

You can read their guide here: https://www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/managing/index.htm

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 apply to employers, employees, self employed persons and duty holders and cover all work with asbestos containing materials.

If your work means that you will come into contact with or potentially disturb asbestos you will need to ensure you are fully aware of the dangers and what you need to do to minimise the risk to you and the people around you whilst you work.
